(Coup-de-Main Party Glider 5)
It is with a heavy heart that we report the passing away of Doug Allen, a member of the famous Coup-de-Main party under Major Howard or as the Major called them his "scallywags"
As part of 6 Airborne Division Doug saw more than enough action. Normandy - Ardennes - Rhine Crossing - Palestine.
Doug never told his family what he had done during his service; he just kept it to himself.
After working for many years as a metalsmith/welder in Surrey, Doug was made redundant. He and his wife Doris made the big move to the West Country. Taunton in Somerset was the spot of their choosing.
It was in 1995 that he joined the PRA West Somerset Branch and soon made his presence felt, first as a committee member, then seven years as Chairman, and finely two years as President.
He was so proud with his President's Badge of Office around his neck, medals on his chest and Red Beret on his head, Blazer brushed, shoes polished. He was a picture to behold.
Doug made a number of trips back to Pegasus Bridge where he met up again with some of his old mates:- Wally Parr, Robbo Roberts, Hamjar Tappenden,Tom Packwood, Frank Bourlet, Billy Gray, Sweeney Todd, David Woods, Rocky Bright, Titch Rayner, Frank Buller all of them very special.
Doug's final battle lasted seven weeks he knew the score, and wanted to go home, so the Hospital agreed. So with wonderful care from his family, friends, carer's and the branch Doug made his landing zone. He will be sorely missed by all that knew him.
Doug's wife Doris passed away seven years ago, so in his words-"I'm off to see my Doll".
Dougie Allen was a kind generous man, and all who knew him, young and old, will remember him with a smile and great affection.
So rest you Airborne Warrior, you've earned it.
